‘Hanging Out the Shingle’

That was a pleasingly evocative expression from a simpler time – describing the old fashioned practice of putting up a sign to let people know you’re in business.

But in today’s world of burgeoning electronic media, specialized publications, name-sponsor events and e-commerce, hanging out the shingle can be a daunting proposition.  And if there’s anything tougher than building a reputation, it’s protecting one.  In a chronically negative media environment, it’s difficult to gain exposure when things are going well; impossible to avoid it when problems arise.

Should you take on these matters “in-house,” working out the language and routing of news releases, making decisions on advertising design and placement, seeking opportunities for media interviews?  Should you try to write a by-lined article for a trade publication, sponsor a sporting event, or exhibit at a trade show?

Do you have a better crisis management plan than “no comment?”

Of course, there’s no shortage of advice and counsel available – from your financial advisors, media sales personnel, consumer focus experts and, of course, the lawyers.  It’s hard to know where to draw the line, or even where to start.

A logical step is to make communications an integral element in achieving positive business results.  The Putnam Communications team can identify specific, measurable public relations objectives that will be realistic within the context of your industry and your unique corporate culture.

We will work with you to prepare a clear, concise strategy that will optimize perception of your company and product; coordinate effective message development and placement; guide you around pitfalls; and ultimately facilitate the best possible outcome by selecting and integrating the appropriate elements from reputation management to media relations.

Contact us for advice on a specific public relations situation, or just to discuss what you might gain from an integrated approach to “hanging out your shingle.”
